Lesson 16: Places & Transport (aller)
Aller — Places, Transport & à / en / au · A0 → A1 · Part 2 · Everyday Actions
You will learn the verb aller (to go), which is irregular, and use it to talk about going to places in town. You will learn the articles for shops and buildings, the contraction à + le = au, and how to say how you travel: en bus, en train, en voiture, or à pied. At the end you will meet a preview of aller + infinitive.
In this lesson
- le verbe aller
- places in town
- à, au, à la, aux, en
- transport with en / à
Vocabulary
| French | Meaning | Say it | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| aller | to go | a-lay الے | Irregular verb. Learn all six forms by heart — there is no pattern. |
| le marché | the market | luh mar-shay لُہ مارشے | Masculine. Je vais au marché (à + le = au). |
| la banque | the bank | la bahnk لا بانک | Feminine. Je vais à la banque. |
| la poste | the post office | la post لا پوسٹ | Feminine. The final e is silent: 'post'. |
| l'école | the school | lay-kol لے کول | Feminine but starts with a vowel, so le/la becomes l'. Je vais à l'école. |
| le bureau | the office / the desk | luh bü-ro لُہ بُورو | Masculine. Also means a desk. Je vais au bureau. |
| l'hôpital | the hospital | lo-pee-tal لوپی تال | Masculine, but the h is silent so it starts with a vowel sound: à l'hôpital. |
| la gare | the train station | la gar لا گار | Feminine. A bus stop is un arrêt de bus, not une gare. |
| la pharmacie | the pharmacy / chemist | la far-ma-see لا فارماسی | Feminine. The ph sounds like f. |
| le supermarché | the supermarket | luh sü-pehr-mar-shay لُہ سُوپیرمارشے | Masculine. Je vais au supermarché. |
| la mosquée | the mosque | la mos-kay لا موسکے | Feminine. Je vais à la mosquée. |
| le parc | the park | luh park لُہ پارک | Masculine. The final c IS pronounced: 'park'. |
| le cinéma | the cinema | luh see-nay-ma لُہ سینے ما | Masculine. Je vais au cinéma. |
| le restaurant | the restaurant | luh res-to-rahn لُہ ریستوران | Masculine. The final t is silent and the an is nasal. |
| la bibliothèque | the library | la bee-blee-o-tek لا بیبلیوتیک | Feminine. Do not confuse it with une librairie, which is a bookshop. |
| les toilettes | the toilets | lay twa-let لے توالیٹ | Always plural in French, even for one toilet. Je vais aux toilettes. |
Pronunciation
| Word | Sounds like | Slowly | How to make the sound |
|---|---|---|---|
| je vais | zhuh vay | zhuh ... vay | The final s of vais is silent. One syllable, no stress on the end. |
| nous allons | noo za-lon | noo ... za-lon | Liaison! The s of nous becomes a z before the vowel: 'noo-za-lon'. The on is nasal. |
| vous allez | voo za-lay | voo ... za-lay | Same liaison: 'voo-za-lay'. This is the polite form with strangers. |
| ils vont | eel von | eel ... von | vont is one nasal syllable. Do not say 'vont-t'. |
| je vais au marché | zhuh vay o mar-shay | zhuh vay ... o ... mar-shay | au is simply the sound 'o'. Never 'a-luh'. The liaison also links vais + au: 'vay-zo'. |
| je vais à l'école | zhuh vay a lay-kol | zhuh vay ... a ... lay-kol | à l' is one smooth block: 'a-lay-kol'. Never separate it. |
The hardest thing here is the contraction. Do not try to say 'à le' — train your mouth to say 'o' (au) straight away.
Grammar
Le verbe ALLER (to go) — irregular, learn it by heart
Aller is the second most important verb in French after être, and it is irregular. Do not look for a pattern: je vais, tu vas, il va, nous allons, vous allez, ils vont. Notice that only nous allons and vous allez look like a normal verb. Vous allez is the form you use politely with a stranger: Vous allez où, monsieur ? Aller is used for going anywhere — a country, a city, a shop, or just a few steps away.
GOING TO A PLACE — à, au, à la, à l', aux … and how you travel
To say where you go, use aller + à + the place. But à cannot stand next to le or les — it joins with them: à + le = au, à + les = aux. This joining is called a contraction and it is obligatory. With à la and à l' nothing changes, because la and l' never contract. So: je vais à Paris (a city takes no article), au marché (le marché), à la banque (la banque), à l'école (l'école), aux toilettes (les toilettes). For transport, use en with a vehicle you sit inside and à for open ones: en bus, en train, en voiture, en avion, but à pied and à vélo.

Listening practice: Amelie's Saturday
Le samedi, je vais au marché avec ma mère. Nous allons à pied, c'est près de la maison. Après, je vais à la banque, puis à la poste. À midi, je vais au restaurant avec mon père. L'après-midi, je vais à la bibliothèque. Le soir, je vais au cinéma avec des amis. Nous allons au cinéma en bus. Et vous, le samedi ?
On Saturdays, I go to the market with my mother. We walk there, it is near the house. Afterwards, I go to the bank, then to the post office. At midday, I go to the restaurant with my father. In the afternoon, I go to the library. In the evening, I go to the cinema with friends. We go to the cinema by bus. And you, on Saturdays?
Questions
- Where does Amelie go first? To the bank / To the market / To the library → To the market
- How do they go to the market? By bus / On foot / By bike → On foot
- Who does she go to the restaurant with? Her mother / Her father / Her friends → Her father
- Where does she go in the afternoon? To the library / To the post office / To the park → To the library

Remember this
- aller = to go. It is irregular: je vais, tu vas, il va, nous allons, vous allez, ils vont.
- nous allons and vous allez are the only two forms that look regular.
- Place rule: aller + à + place. A city takes no article: je vais à Paris.
- Contractions: à + le = au, à + les = aux. These are obligatory.
- à la and à l' never contract: à la banque, à l'école, à l'hôpital.
- Nouns always come with their article: le marché, la banque, la poste, le bureau, la gare.
- Transport you sit inside: en bus, en train, en voiture, en avion.
- Open transport: à pied, à vélo.
- Liaison: nous allons = 'noo-za-lon'; vous allez = 'voo-za-lay'.
- PREVIEW: aller + infinitive makes the near future (je vais travailler). Full lesson 27.
Common mistakes
| Instead of | Say | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Je vais à le marché. | Je vais au marché. | à + le must contract to au. Saying 'à le' is a clear beginner mistake. |
| Je vais à les toilettes. | Je vais aux toilettes. | à + les must contract to aux. |
| Je vais à Paris en pied. | Je vais à Paris à pied. | Walking uses à pied, not en. Also note that cities take à with no article. |
| Nous allons pronounced 'noo allon' (no liaison) | noo za-lon | When a word ends in s and the next starts with a vowel, the s becomes a z sound. This is liaison. |
| Je vais à école. | Je vais à l'école. | Before a vowel, le or la becomes l' — you must not leave the article out. |

Homework (15 minutes)
1) Write the six forms of aller from memory three times, then check. 2) Draw a simple map of your town with six places from this lesson (le marché, la banque, la poste, la pharmacie, le parc, le supermarché). Under the map write 'Je vais …' for each one, using the correct article. 3) Say out loud how you travel to three of those places: à pied, en bus, en voiture. 4) Record yourself saying 'Je vais au marché' and 'Je vais à la banque' — check that au is the sound 'o' and that à la stays two words.
