Vocabulary

FrenchMeaningSay itNote
je suis allé(e)I wentzhuh swee za-lay ژُ سوِی زالےaller uses ÊTRE, not avoir. Link it: zhuh-swee-za-lay.
je suis parti(e)I left / I went awayzhuh swee par-tee ژُ سوِی پارٹیpartir uses ÊTRE. A woman writes and says parti(e) with an extra e in writing only.
je suis arrivé(e)I arrivedzhuh swee za-ree-vay ژُ سوِی زاریوےarriver uses ÊTRE.
je suis venu(e)I camezhuh swee vuh-nü * ژُ سوِی وُنُو *venir uses ÊTRE and its participle is irregular: venu.
elle est venueshe cameel eh vuh-nü * ایل اے وُنُو *Notice the extra e: venue. With être the participle agrees with the subject.
nous sommes restéswe stayednoo som res-tay نو سوم ریسٹےrester uses ÊTRE. restés has an s because nous is plural.
ils sont tombésthey felleel son ton-bay ایل سوں ٹومبےtomber uses ÊTRE. tombés has an s for the plural.
je suis né(e)I was bornzhuh swee nay ژُ سوِی نےnaître uses ÊTRE. née = born (female) — same sound as né.

Pronunciation

WordSounds likeSlowlyHow to make the sound
je suis allé / je suis alléezhuh-swee-za-layzhuh swee ... za ... layBoth spellings sound IDENTICAL. The extra e of allée is only a written signal that the speaker is female.
ils sont alléseel-son-ta-layeel son ... ta ... laysont + allés links into one sound: son-ta-lay. French joins a final consonant to a following vowel — this is liaison.
j'ai euzhay ü *zhay ... üeu is NOT 'ay-oo'. It is the tight French u: say 'ee' with your lips rounded as if whistling. Urdu و is not the same sound, so use the tip, not the spelling.
j'ai étézhay ay-tayzhay ... ay ... tayDo not confuse été (the participle, 'ay-tay') with être (the infinitive, 'etr'). This is a very common listening trap.
néenaynaynée, né, nés, nées all sound the same: 'nay'. Never say 'nay-ee'.

Two things to listen for: (1) aller/partir with être link smoothly — zhuh-swee-za-lay; (2) the irregular participles eu, vu, lu contain the French u, which you must shape with tight, rounded lips.

Grammar

The ÊTRE verbs — the movement group (DR & MRS VANDERTRAMP)

A small group of verbs about movement and change of state use ÊTRE as the helper instead of AVOIR. French schoolchildren remember them with the phrase DR & MRS VANDERTRAMP. The fifteen verbs you need are: devenir, revenir, monter, rester, sortir, venir, aller, naître, descendre, entrer, retourner, tomber, arriver, partir, mourir. Learn them as a list — once you know the list, the choice between avoir and être is automatic.

Agreement: with être the participle behaves like an adjective

With AVOIR the participle never changes. With ÊTRE it changes like an adjective to match the subject: je suis allé (male) / je suis allée (female); ils sont allés (mixed or all male) / elles sont allées (all female). The extra e, s, or es are silent — je suis allé and je suis allée sound exactly the same — but you must write them correctly, because the written form is a real grammar rule. Full forms: je suis allé(e), tu es allé(e), il est allé, elle est allée, nous sommes allés, vous êtes allé(e)(s), ils sont allés, elles sont allées. Same for partir: je suis parti(e), tu es parti(e), il est parti, elle est partie, nous sommes partis, vous êtes parti(s), ils sont partis, elles sont parties. And learn these thirteen irregular participles by heart: eu, été, fait, vu, pris, mis, dit, écrit, bu, lu, venu, allé, parti.

Listening practice: Le week-end dernier — a small trip

Le week-end dernier, je suis allé à Islamabad avec ma famille. D'abord, nous sommes partis très tôt le matin. Ensuite, nous sommes arrivés à dix heures. Puis, nous avons visité un grand marché. Après, nous avons mangé au restaurant. Enfin, nous sommes restés chez mon oncle. Le soir, j'ai écouté de la musique et je suis allé au lit tôt.

Last weekend I went to Islamabad with my family. First, we left very early in the morning. Then we arrived at ten o'clock. After that, we visited a big market. Afterwards, we ate at a restaurant. Finally, we stayed at my uncle's house. In the evening I listened to music and went to bed early.

  • When did they leave? Very early in the morning / At ten o'clock / In the evening → Very early in the morning

Remember this

  • A small group of movement verbs uses ÊTRE, not avoir: aller, venir, arriver, partir, entrer, sortir, monter, descendre, rester, tomber, naître, mourir, retourner, devenir.
  • Mnemonics help: DR & MRS VANDERTRAMP.
  • With être the participle agrees with the subject: je suis allé / je suis allée / elles sont parties.
  • Never say 'j'ai allé' — it is always je suis allé.
  • Full forms: je suis allé(e), tu es allé(e), il est allé, elle est allée, nous sommes allés, vous êtes allé(s), ils sont allés, elles sont allées.
  • Irregular participles to memorise: eu, été, fait, vu, pris, mis, dit, écrit, bu, lu, venu, allé, parti.
  • Build a past story with d'abord → ensuite / puis → enfin.
  • Avoir = no agreement; être = agreement. Keep this sentence in your head.
  • The extra e / s / es of agreement are silent — they change the writing, not the sound.

Common mistakes

Instead ofSayWhy
J'ai allé au marché.Je suis allé au marché.aller NEVER uses avoir. This is the most famous beginner error in French. Learn the être list and you are safe.
Elle est allé.Elle est allée.With être, the participle agrees with the subject. A female subject needs the extra e.
J'ai venu avec ma sœur.Je suis venu avec ma sœur.venir is in the être group. 'J'ai venu' does not exist.
Nous sommes allé à Islamabad.Nous sommes allés à Islamabad.nous is plural, so allés needs its s. The s is silent, but it must be written.
Je suis allée (a man writing).Je suis allé (a man writing).Agreement follows the real person speaking. A male speaker writes allé with no extra e.
