Grammar

- What is the rule about the last letter of a French word? It is usually silent.
- Name the four final consonants that are usually pronounced. C, R, F, L
- Explain the difference between 'tu' and 'vous'. 'tu' is informal (friends and family); 'vous' is polite or plural.
- How do you ask a friend 'How are you?' with intonation? Ça va ? — the voice rises at the end.
- What is elision? Give one example. A vowel is dropped before another vowel: je + ai → j'ai.
- What is liaison? Give one example. A normally silent final consonant is pronounced before a vowel: vous avez → voo-za-vay.
- How do you give your age in French? With avoir: j'ai vingt ans.
- In 'je m'appelle', what does the little 'm'' mean? 'me' — it means 'myself'.
- How does your voice change in a French question made with intonation? It rises at the end.

- Which letter is silent at the end of 'salut'? The final t.
- Do French and English use the same alphabet? Yes — 26 letters in the same order.
- Which spelling makes the nasal sound in 'bonjour'? on
- How do you write the sound 'wa' (as in 'revoir')? oi
- What sound does é (acute accent) give? The 'ay' sound (café → ka-fay).
- What sound does ç always give? The s sound (français → fran-say).
- Where is the French r made? At the back of the throat — a soft, light gargle.
- How do you make the French u? Round your lips tightly as if to whistle, then say 'ee'.
- What happens to the air in a nasal vowel like 'on'? It goes out through the nose; the tongue does not close the n.
- How do you say 'oui'? 'wee' — the sounds w + ee.
