This test covers lessons 7 to 12. You will use subject pronouns, the verb être, articles, the verb avoir, age, family words, possessive adjectives, adjectives and colours, and the phrases c'est and il y a. Read every question twice before you answer.

- Conjugate ÊTRE in full. je suis, tu es, il/elle/on est, nous sommes, vous êtes, ils/elles sont
- How do you know the gender of a French noun? From its article: un / le = masculine, une / la = feminine.
- When do you use 'l'' and 'les'? 'l'' before a vowel or silent h (l'ami); 'les' before any plural noun.
- How do you form the plural of most nouns? Add -s: un livre → des livres.
- Conjugate AVOIR in full. j'ai, tu as, il/elle/on a, nous avons, vous avez, ils/elles ont
- How do you say your age? With AVOIR: j'ai douze ans.
- Give the three possessive adjectives for 'my'. mon (masculine), ma (feminine), mes (plural)
- How does an adjective agree with its noun? Add -e for feminine, -s for plural, -es for feminine plural: grand, grande, grands, grandes.
- How do you say 'there is / there are' and 'there is not any'? il y a / il n'y a pas de
Pronunciation
- Are the verb endings -e, -es and -ent pronounced? No — they are silent. je parle, tu parles and ils parlent sound the same.
- How do you pronounce 'ils sont'? 'eel son' — the final t is silent and 'on' is nasal.
- How do you pronounce 'elles sont'? 'el son' — exactly the same as 'ils sont'.
- How do you pronounce 'nous sommes'? 'noo som' — the final s of sommes is silent.
- How do you say 'j'ai'? 'zhay' — elision joins je + ai into one sound.
- What is the liaison in 'les amis'? The silent s of les becomes a z: 'lay-za-mee'.
- How do you pronounce 'un grand homme'? With liaison: 'un gran-ton'.
- How do you pronounce 'une fenêtre'? 'ün fuh-netr' — ê is an open 'eh'.
- How do you pronounce 'ils ont'? 'eel zon' — liaison links ils and ont.
- How do you pronounce 'c'est'? 'seh' — the final t is silent.
Translation
- Je suis étudiant et j'ai vingt ans. I am a student and I am twenty years old.
- Nous sommes une petite famille. We are a small family.
- Mon père est grand et ma mère est petite. My father is tall and my mother is short.
- Il y a une table et quatre chaises dans la cuisine. There is a table and four chairs in the kitchen.
- C'est mon frère. Il a dix ans. This is my brother. He is ten years old.
- How do you say 'I have a big house' in French? J'ai une grande maison.
- How do you say 'She is my sister and she is nice' in French? Elle est ma sœur et elle est gentille.
- How do you say 'There is no television in my room' in French? Il n'y a pas de télévision dans ma chambre.
- How do you say 'These are my parents' in French? Ce sont mes parents.
- How do you say 'The blue car is small' in French? La voiture bleue est petite.
Speaking
- Introduce your family in three short sentences. Voici ma famille. Mon père est grand. Ma mère est gentille.
- Describe your house with 'il y a'. Dans ma maison, il y a un salon, une cuisine et deux chambres.
- Say what colour your bag is. Mon sac est noir.
- Say how old you are and how old your brother is. J'ai vingt ans et mon frère a dix ans.
- Point at a picture of your parents. Ce sont mes parents.
- Say that your house is big and beautiful. Ma maison est grande et belle.
- Describe your best friend in two sentences. Mon ami est grand et sympa. Il a vingt ans.
- Say 'My mother is Pakistani and my father is French'. Ma mère est pakistanaise et mon père est français.
