What this site does and does not do with your information, in plain words.

The short version

This site does not ask who you are. There is no account, no sign-up and no login, and you never have to give your name or your email address to use the course.

Nothing about your learning is stored on a server. Everything the site remembers is kept inside your own browser.

The site owner cannot see your progress, your chosen language or your star ratings, because none of it is sent anywhere.

What is stored in your browser

The site uses a browser feature called localStorage. It works like a small notebook kept on your own device.

It stores your learning progress, the lessons you have ticked as complete, the interface language you chose, and any star rating you give.

This information never leaves your device. It is not uploaded, not copied, and not visible to anyone else, including the site owner.

If you clear your browser data, this information is deleted permanently. There is no server-side copy, so there is no way to recover it afterwards.

Cookies

The course itself sets no cookies of its own. The lessons you tick off, your chosen language and your voice settings are kept in your browser's local storage — not in cookies — and none of it is sent anywhere.

A cookie is a small file that a website leaves on your device so it can recognise you later. The course does not leave one on your device, but the advertising described in the next section does, once advertising is switched on.

You can block or delete cookies at any time in your browser settings. Blocking advertising cookies will not stop ads from appearing; it will only make them less relevant to you.

Advertising

This course is free, and it is paid for by advertising.

When advertising is switched on, ads are served by Google AdSense and by other third-party advertising companies. Google and its partners use cookies — including the DoubleClick cookie — to serve ads based on your earlier visits to this site and to other sites on the internet.

You can switch off personalised advertising at any time in Google's Ads Settings, at https://www.google.com/settings/ads. You can also switch off personalised advertising from many other advertising companies at https://www.aboutads.info/choices/ or, in Europe, at https://www.youronlinechoices.eu/.

If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you are asked for your consent before any advertising cookie is set. Refusing personalised advertising costs you nothing: every lesson, test and exam stays open.

Advertising never changes the teaching. The course is exactly the same whether you accept advertising cookies or refuse them. No advertiser has any say in what is taught here.

Visitor statistics

The site counts visits so its owner can tell whether the course is being found and used. The counting is done by Cloudflare Web Analytics.

That service sets no cookie and stores nothing on your device, and it does not build a profile of you from your IP address or your browser. It records only that a page was opened, the country the visit came from, and roughly how quickly the page loaded.

No name, no email address and no lesson progress is ever sent to it. Because nothing is stored on your device, no consent banner is needed.

If the owner has not switched counting on, no visit data is collected at all.

Translations and third-party services

English and Urdu meanings are built into the site. They need no internet and no outside service.

If you choose any other language, the English text of a word, phrase or question is sent to free third-party machine-translation services so that it can be translated. The two services used are MyMemory, at translated.net, and Google Translate.

Only the lesson text is sent. Your name, your email address, your progress and any other personal data are never sent to those services.

The translation that comes back is saved in your browser cache, so the same text does not have to be sent a second time. MyMemory and Google Translate each have their own privacy policies, which are separate from this one.

Audio and the microphone

Spoken French is produced by your own browser using its built-in speech synthesis. No audio is sent anywhere.

The microphone is used on one page only, the Speak and check page, and only when you press the microphone button. It is used to compare what you said with the target phrase.

Depending on your browser, speech recognition may be processed by your browser provider. For example, Chrome may use Google for this part.

If you never press the microphone button, the microphone is never used.

Feedback and problem reports

Sending feedback is completely optional. You can use the whole course and never send anything at all.

If you do send a feedback or problem report, whatever you type is sent to the site owner so that the problem can be looked at and fixed.

If you type your email address into the form, that address is sent as well, so that the owner can reply to you.

Nothing else is collected with the report.

Page-view statistics

The site may use a privacy-respecting page-view counter, which can be enabled only by the owner.

It is used for one purpose: to see which lessons are popular, so that the course can be improved.

If the counter is switched off, no visitor statistics are collected at all. The site works in exactly the same way either way.

Children

This site is suitable for all ages, including children.

It collects nothing from anyone, children included. There is no age gate, because there is nothing to collect and no account to create.

A parent or a teacher can let a child use the course without any sign-up and without giving any information.

Your rights

Because nothing is stored on a server, there is no personal data for the owner to export, correct or delete.

You are in full control of everything the site remembers. Clearing your browser storage removes all of it, immediately and completely.

If you have a question about your data, the honest answer is that this site holds none of it.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the change will be shown on this page and the last updated date at the bottom will be changed as well.

There is no email list to notify you through, because the site has no way of contacting you.
