Pronunciation
- What is the rule about the last letter of a French word? It is usually silent.
- Which final consonants are usually pronounced? C, R, F, L
- How do you pronounce the nasal in 'bonjour'? The air goes through the nose; the tongue does not close the n.
- How do you make the French u? Round your lips tightly as for a whistle, then say 'ee'.
- Where is the French r made? At the back of the throat — soft and light.
- How do you pronounce 'oi'? Like 'wa' (revoir → ruh-vwar).
- How do you pronounce the acute accent é? The 'ay' sound (café → ka-fay).
- How do you pronounce the cedilla ç? Always an s sound (français → fran-say).
- What is liaison? A normally silent final consonant is pronounced before a vowel: vous avez → voo-za-vay.
- What is elision? Dropping a vowel before another vowel: je + ai → j'ai.
- Are the verb endings -e, -es and -ent pronounced? No, they are silent; je parle, tu parles and ils parlent sound the same.
- How do you pronounce 'un grand homme'? With liaison: 'un gran-ton'.
- How do you make a French question with intonation? The words stay the same and the voice rises at the end.
- How do you pronounce 'ils sont' and 'elles sont'? 'eel son' and 'el son' — they sound the same.
- How do you pronounce 'beaucoup'? 'bo-koo' — the p is silent.
