Lesson 41: Imparfait vs passé composé
Il pleuvait quand je suis sorti — background and event · A1 → A2 · A2 · Part 2 — Describing the Past
This is the single most useful contrast in French past narration. One tense paints the scene, the other moves the story forward. You will learn to choose correctly every time, and to combine both in one sentence.
In this lesson
- imparfait vs passé composé
- quand + imperfect
- scene setting
- interrupted action
Vocabulary
| French | Meaning | Say it | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| il pleuvait | it was raining | eel pluh-vay ایل پلُووے | Weather in the background is always imperfect. |
| tout à coup | suddenly | too-ta-koo توتاکو | A classic signal that the next verb will be passé composé. |
| soudain | suddenly | soo-dan سوداں | Same job as 'tout à coup'. Both interrupt a scene. |
| pendant que | while | pon-don kuh پونڈاں کُو | 'Pendant que' takes the imperfect — the second action cuts across it. |
| quand | when | kon کون | Most useful pattern: 'Quand + imperfect, passé composé.' |
| j'ai vu | I saw | zhay vü ژے وُو | voir → vu. An event, so passé composé. |
| j'ai entendu | I heard | zhay on-ton-dü ژے اونٹونڈُو | entendre → entendu. An event. |
| j'ai commencé | I started | zhay ko-mon-say ژے کومانسے | A beginning is always an event — never imperfect. |
| j'ai décidé | I decided | zhay day-see-day ژے ڈیسیڈے | A decision happens once. Passé composé. |
| il était une fois | once upon a time | eel ay-tay tün fwa ایل اے تے اَن فوا | Every French fairy tale opens this way — and the verb is imperfect, because a scene is being set. |
| déjà | already | day-zha ڈے ژا | 'Quand je suis arrivé, il était déjà parti.' |
| au moment où | at the moment when | o mo-mon oo او موموں او | 'Au moment où je sortais, le téléphone a sonné.' |
Pronunciation
| Word | Sounds like | Slowly | How to make the sound |
|---|---|---|---|
| il pleuvait | eel pluh-vay | eel ... pluh ... vay | Long and open. This is the background sound. |
| il a plu | ee-la-plü | ee ... la ... plü | Two short blocks. The event sound. Liaison: 'la-plü'. |
| j'ai entendu | zhay-on-ton-dü | zhay ... on ... ton ... dü | Liaison on j'ai: zhay-on. Round the final ü. |
| tout à coup | too-ta-koo | too ... ta ... koo | One smooth block. Liaison t → t. |
| pendant que | pon-don-kuh | pon ... don ... kuh | Both syllables nasal, then a light 'kuh'. |
| quand je suis sorti | kon-zhuh-swee-sor-tee | kon ... zhuh ... swee ... sor ... tee | No liaison after 'quand' here; keep each block clean. |
In this lesson the difficulty is not a sound but a rhythm. The imperfect is a long, open, continuing sound (pluh-VAY). The passé composé is two short, closed pieces (zhay VÜ). Say them side by side and feel the difference in shape.
Grammar
One paints the picture, the other moves it
Think of a photograph and a film. The imperfect is the photograph — everything standing still in the background: the weather, the time, people's mood, what you were doing. The passé composé is the next frame — the single thing that happened and changed everything.
The workhorse pattern: quand + imparfait, passé composé
This one pattern carries most French storytelling. The imperfect sets the scene; the passé composé interrupts it.

Dialogue: Something happened on the way to work
Mark every verb: is it painting the scene or moving the story? The imperfect ones will be the long 'ay' sounds; the événements will be the short two-piece forms. Read it aloud and listen to the rhythm change.

Say it out loud
- Il pleuvait quand je suis sorti. — It was raining when I went out. Long 'pluh-vay', then two short blocks: swee-sor-tee.
- Je dormais quand le téléphone a sonné. — I was sleeping when the phone rang. Keep 'dor-may' open and continuing.
- Tout à coup, j'ai entendu un bruit. — Suddenly I heard a noise. 'tout à coup' is one block: too-ta-koo.
- J'ai décidé de partir. — I decided to leave. A decision is always passé composé.
- Pendant que je lisais, il est arrivé. — While I was reading, he arrived. Two tenses, one sentence. Feel the change of shape.
- Quand je suis arrivé, tout le monde était parti. — When I arrived, everyone had left. Liaison twice: swee-za, ay-tay.
Listening practice: A small accident on Saturday
Samedi, il faisait très beau. Je me promenais dans le parc quand j'ai vu un chien tout seul. Il courait vers la route. J'ai couru après lui et je l'ai attrapé juste à temps. Une dame est arrivée — c'était sa propriétaire. Elle pleurait. Elle m'a remercié et nous avons parlé pendant vingt minutes.
On Saturday the weather was beautiful. I was walking in the park when I saw a dog on its own. It was running towards the road. I ran after it and caught it just in time. A lady arrived — it was her owner. She was crying. She thanked me and we talked for twenty minutes.
Questions
- What was the weather like? It was raining / It was very nice / It was cold → It was very nice
- Where was the narrator walking? In the park / In the street / On the beach → In the park
- What did the narrator see? A cat / A dog alone / A child → A dog alone
- How did the lady feel? She was laughing / She was crying / She was angry → She was crying
- How long did they talk? Ten minutes / Twenty minutes / An hour → Twenty minutes
Remember this
- Imparfait = background, description, habit, ongoing action, weather, mood.
- Passé composé = single event, interruption, beginning, end, decision.
- The test: does it move the story forward by one step? → passé composé.
- Both tenses live happily in one sentence: 'Il pleuvait quand je suis sorti.'
- Signal words for events: tout à coup, soudain, ensuite, enfin.
- Signal words for background: d'habitude, tous les jours, souvent, pendant que, il y a.
- Weather in the background is imperfect: il pleuvait, il faisait beau, il faisait froid.
- il était une fois starts a story — and is imperfect.
- Never say 'tout à coup' with the imperfect.
- The rhythm changes too: imparfait is one long open sound, passé composé is two short blocks.
Common mistakes
| Instead of | Say | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Il a plu quand je suis sorti. (for background weather) | Il pleuvait quand je suis sorti. | If you mean 'rain was coming down around me', it is background → imperfect. |
| Je dormais quand le téléphone sonnait. | Je dormais quand le téléphone a sonné. | The phone rang once — a single event. Both verbs imperfect would mean the phone rang repeatedly. |
| Tout à coup, je voyais un chien. | Tout à coup, j'ai vu un chien. | 'Tout à coup' always introduces an event → passé composé. |
| J'ai commencé à lire tous les jours. | Je lisais tous les jours. | A repeated habit does not take the passé composé. Only the beginning of a new habit does: 'J'ai commencé à lire en janvier.' |
Practice questions

Homework (35 minutes)
1) Write eight sentences with the shape 'imparfait + quand + passé composé'. 2) Take one of them and expand it into a six-line story, alternating the two tenses. 3) Mark each verb with I (imparfait) or P (passé composé) and check that the events move the story while the descriptions do not. 4) Read the whole thing aloud — listen to the rhythm change.
