You will learn the verb faire (to do / to make) and use it for the weather, for sport and for hobbies. You will learn the difference between jouer à (sports and games) and jouer de (instruments), and the expressions faire du / de la / de l' / des. You will also be able to say what you do NOT do.

faire and fait are so short that beginners often say them too long. They are one single syllable. Keep them short and let the final letters stay silent.
Grammar
Le verbe FAIRE (to do / to make) — watch vous faites
Faire means both 'to do' and 'to make'. It is irregular. Learn the six forms: je fais, tu fais, il fait, nous faisons, vous faites, ils font. Notice two things. First, je, tu and il all use the same stem fais- but you hear it differently: je fais and tu fais are 'zhuh feh' and 'tü feh' with a silent s, while il fait is 'eel feh' with a silent t. Second, vous faites is the odd one out: it is NOT 'vous faisez'. French people themselves say vous faites. Faire is used for the weather with il: il fait beau, il fait froid.
jouer À or jouer DE? And faire du / de la / de l' / des
Jouer is followed by à when you play a sport or a game — something with rules and a winner: jouer au football, jouer aux cartes, jouer au tennis. Remember the contraction à + le = au and à + les = aux from lesson 16. Jouer is followed by de when you play a musical instrument — the instrument is a tool you use, not a game: jouer du piano, jouer de la guitare, jouer de la musique. The same idea works with faire: faire du sport, faire de la natation, faire du vélo, faire de la musique. Un, une and du change in the negative: je ne fais pas de sport.

Say it out loud
- Qu'est-ce que tu fais ? — What are you doing? kes-kuh is one quick block.
- Je fais mes devoirs. — I am doing my homework. fais is one short syllable: feh.
- Il fait beau aujourd'hui. — The weather is nice today. aujourd'hui = o-zhoor-dwee.
- Il fait froid. — It is cold. froid is one syllable with 'wa'.
- Il pleut et il fait du vent. — It is raining and windy. pleut = pluh, tight lips.
- Nous jouons au football. — We play football. jouons is two syllables: zhoo-on.
- Je joue de la guitare. — I play the guitar. Instrument → de.
- Elle joue du piano le soir. — She plays the piano in the evening. du piano, not au piano.
- Je fais du sport tous les jours. — I do sport every day. tous les jours = 'too lay zhoor'.
- Je ne fais pas de sport, mais je fais de la natation. — I don't do sport, but I swim. Negative: du → de.
Listening practice: What I do in a week
Le lundi, je fais du sport au parc. Le mercredi, il fait beau et je joue au football avec mes amis. Le jeudi, il pleut, alors je reste à la maison et je joue de la guitare. Le vendredi soir, nous jouons aux cartes. Le samedi, je fais du vélo. En hiver, il fait froid et il neige. Moi, j'aime le soleil ! Et vous, qu'est-ce que vous faites ?
On Mondays, I do sport in the park. On Wednesdays, the weather is nice and I play football with my friends. On Thursdays, it rains, so I stay at home and play the guitar. Remember this
- faire = to do AND to make.
- faire is irregular: je fais, tu fais, il fait, nous faisons, vous faites, ils font.
- vous faites is the special form — never 'vous faisez'.
- Weather uses il fait + adjective: il fait beau, il fait mauvais, il fait chaud, il fait froid.
- More weather: il fait du soleil, il fait du vent, il pleut, il neige.
- jouer à for sports and games (jouer au football, jouer aux cartes).
- jouer de for instruments (jouer du piano, jouer de la guitare).
- New contraction: de + le = du.
- faire du sport, faire de la natation, faire du vélo, faire de la musique.
- In the negative, du / de la become de: je ne fais pas de sport.
Common mistakes

1) Look out of the window and describe the weather out loud in three different ways using il fait. 2) Write two lists: three sports you play (jouer au…), three instruments you would like to play (jouer du / de la…). 3) Write five sentences about your week using je fais du / de la / de l' and recycle aller, for example 'Le samedi, je vais au parc et je fais du sport.' 4) Write the negative versions of two of them.
